Leveraging green roof technology: Stakeholder analysis of sustainable urban landscape in the developing regions of South Asia

Abstract

Green roofs offer a promising nature-based solution for improving urban resilience and environmental quality, particularly in developing regions of South Asia. However, despite recognized environmental and economic benefits, adoption remains limited across both developed and developing nations. This study presents stakeholder dialogue on public engagement, regulations, financial support and policy formulation for integrating green roofs into urban planning. Focus group dialogue using World Café methodology was conducted with 70 experts to assess respondents' awareness, attitudes, perceived barriers and opportunities, and willingness to support green roofs adoption. Thematic analysis identified 213 barriers and 198 opportunities related to Pakistan's green roof industry, categorized into social, economic, environmental, legal/administrative and technological aspects. Analysis reveals barriers and opportunities are most significant during construction and utilization stages, emphasizing the need to overcome initial challenges for long-term functionality. Feasibility assessment shows considerable regional variations in socio-economic and geographical conditions, indicating localized strategies are crucial for effective implementation.
