The role of media visibility in mitigating greenwashing driven by executive environmental cognition: Evidence from China

Abstract

Facing the dilemma of executives being powerless to reduce greenwashing, media visibility (MV) might be the solution. Using agenda-setting theory as a theoretical framework, this research explores how media visibility moderates the relationship between executive environmental cognition (EEC) and greenwashing. Based on data from listed companies in China from 2011 to 2022, this paper finds that EEC exacerbates corporate greenwashing behavior, but this effect can be mitigated by MV. Further analysis reveals that the effect of MV is more pronounced in executives with non-overseas backgrounds and state-owned enterprises. This study emphasizes the importance of strengthening media oversight and offers applicability for emerging economies with similar regulatory frameworks.
