Social Norms in Individual Pro-environmental Practices in the Workplace

Abstract

While a number of researchers analyze pro-environmental behavior in households, the study on individuals¡Ç energy and resource conservation practices in the workplace is still in the early stage. Paying a particular attention to social norms in the workplace, this paper estimates a structural model of the social interactions in individuals¡Ç decisions to engage in environmentally friendly practices in the workplace using data from a Japanese survey. Accounting for endogeneity that stems from simultaneity, common shocks and nonrandom group selection, we find some influence of social norms on individuals¡Ç pro-environmental behavior in the workplace.
