How Does Losing Health Insurance Affect Disability Claims? Evidence from the Affordable Care Act’s Dependent Care Mandate

Abstract

We assess how SSI participation changes around age-26, the age at which young adults lose access to dependent care coverage. We find a significant uptick in SSI disability applications and awards as young adults age out of parental coverage.
