Fusiones y poder de mercado en la industria mundial del cobre

Abstract

Los mercados de los commodities, entre los que se incluye el cobre, han tendido en forma creciente a concentrarse en estos últimos años. Como resultado, se está pasando a un esquema de gigantes especializados y dominantes en sus productos específicos. En cobre, CODELCO, que sigue siendo la principal empresa productora de cobre del mundo, ha visto su primacía seriamente amenazada. En forma periódica surgen voces que proponen la conveniencia para Chile de aprovechar su posición dominante en el mercado para ejercer poder monopólico. Sin embargo no existe evidencia objetiva de que ello sea plausible ni conveniente para los intereses de Chile. Se discute en este trabajo una forma de plantear esta inquietud en base a la realidad actual del sector. Se presenta la evolución esperada del sector minero, y del cobre en particular, en cuanto a su consolidación. Además, se analizan los modelos disponibles para examinar la posibilidad de que Chile ejerza algún grado de poder monopólico en la formación del precio del cobre. No se desarrolla un nuevo modelo si no que se plantean las interrogantes que deben responderse -en este nuevo escenario-antes de pensar en embarcarse en una aventura semejante.
