Déterminants de la consommation du riz local en Afrique de l’ouest : cas du Benin

Abstract

Ce travail a pour objectif d’identifier les déterminants de la consommation du riz local au Bénin. A partir d’une enquête semi structurée, les données ont été collectées auprès de 375 ménages des villes et villages des 4 régions du Bénin. Un modèle log-log d’Engel a été spécifié et estimé par la méthode des moments généralisés (GMM) qui permet de corriger les problèmes d’endogénéité liés au revenu du ménage. Les résultats montrent d’une part, que le revenu du ménage est effectivement endogène. D’autres parts la consommation du riz local au Bénin augmente avec la taille et le revenu des ménages et diminue avec la distance séparant les résidences des ménages des marchés. La possession de parcelle de riz; la région de résidence du ménage; la résidence en milieu rural et l’ethnie du chef ménage étaient les variables qualitatives les plus significatives dans l’explication de la quantité de riz local consommée dans les ménages au Bénin. Cependant, la plupart des signes de ces variables indiquaient que "la production du riz" constitue le facteur le plus important dans l’explication de la quantité de riz local consommée dans les ménages au Bénin. Les acteurs à divers niveaux devraient donc, oeuvrer pour plus de production de riz au Bénin. Ensuite, une politique de distribution devrait être mise en place afin que le riz produit soit le plus proche possible du consommateur. Cela permettra aux consommateurs béninois de consommer le riz local.
