Designing and conducting stated choice experiments

Abstract

Stated choice experiments are widely used in various fields in applied economics to elicit preferences of decision makers, to forecast choice behaviour, and to determine willingness-to-pay for characteristics of products, services, or policies. This chapter provides guidance in designing and conducting such choice experiments. In particular, it describes a process with the following steps: 1) determining what type of alternatives to use based on the research questions, 2) determining which alternatives and attributes to consider in the choice tasks, 3) determining the attribute levels and their coding, 4) determining the number of choice tasks in the experimental design, 5) choosing an experimental design strategy, 6) conducting pre-testing and a pilot study, 7) conduct the main study. Each of these steps is discussed in detail and includes references to relevant background sources. Further, examples are discussed in the fields of transport, environmental economics, marketing, and health economics.
