Abstract

Digital technologies are widely used in industry and serve the purpose of supporting processes and streamlining procedures. However, whereas much is known about the use of digitalisation in industry, it is important to examine how it may be deployed as part of attempts to foster sustainability in an industrial context. In order to address this need, this paper provides an analysis of digitalisation in industrial processes as a whole and on production and operations in particular, in order to make them more sustainable. For this, a bibliometric analysis review is performed, and a survey is conducted with professionals in the area worldwide. The results show that, whereas the process is getting more and more advanced, there are still various barriers that hinder efforts to promote a more efficient development of products and processes. The paper concludes by providing some recommendations aimed at mainstreaming sustainability procedures in industrial operations as part of corporate social responsibility efforts.
