Industrial Restructuring and Regional Household Income Growth

Abstract

NEGREY C., ZICKEL M. B. and FENN J. M. (1998) Industrial restructuring and regional household income growth, Reg. Studies 32 , 103-111. In this study industry and place intersect in a systematic examination of the effects of industrial restructuring on men's and women's personal income and married-couple and female-headed household income. We analyse income trends from 1969-89 in relationship to shifts in employment in: manufacturing; finance, insurance and real estate; wholesale and retail trade; and services in 140 US metropolitan areas, grouped into six types. Improvements in women's income appear to have offset men's losses in all six area types, given increases in average median married-couple household income in each area type during the 20-year period. Our most provocative finding is the average decrease in median female-headed household income in the 19 classic deindustrializing centres while female-headed household income actually increased on average in the five other area types. On analyse les tendances du revenu de 1969 a 1989 par rapport a l'evolution de l'emploi industriel; aux finances, a l'assurance et aux biens immobiliers; au commerce de gros et de detail; et aux services dans 140 zones metropolitaines aux Etats-Unis, regroupees en six categories. Il para L t que les ameliorations du revenu des femmes compensent les pertes des hommes dans chacun des six regroupements, etant donnel'accroissement du revenu menager, moyen, median des couples maries dans chacun des regroupements sur la periode de vingt ans. Le resultat le plus provocant c'est la baisse moyenne du revenu menager, median des femmes qui soutiennent la famille dans les dixneuf Centres de Desindustrialisation Classiques, tandis que le revenu menager des femmes qui soutiennent la famille a augmenteen fait en moyenne dans les cinq autres categories de zones. In dieser Studie uberschneiden sich Industrie und Ortlichkeit in einer systematischen Untersuchung der Auswirkung industrieller Umstrukturierung auf die personlichen Einkommen von Mannern und Frauen, sowie Einkommen in Haushalten von Ehepaaren und solchen, denen Frauen allein vorstehen. Analysiert werden Einkommentendenzen im Zeitraum 1969-1989 im Verhaltnis zu Verschiebungen in der Erwerbstatigkeit in der herstellenden Industrie; Finanz, Versicherung und Immobilien; Grosshandel und Einzelhandel; und Dienstleistungen in 140 Grossstadtgebieten der Vereinigten Staaten, die ihrem Typ entsprechend in 6 Gruppen kategorisiert werden. In Anbetracht des Anstiegs der Einkommen von durchschnittlichen median Ehepaaren wahrend dieses Zeitraums von 20 Jahren scheinen Aufbesserungen der Einkommen von Frauen in allen sechs Gebietstypen die Verluste der Manner auszugleichen. Der provokativste Befund ist die durchschnittliche Abnahme des Einkommens im median Haushalt der 19 klassischen entindustrialisierten Zentren, denen Frauen vorstehen, wahrend Einkommen in Haushalten in den anderen Gebietstypen, denen Frauen vorstehen, zugenommen haben. Diese Befunde haben Implikationen fur die anhaltende Debatte der Wohlfahrtsreform.
