Understanding Tourists' Preferences for Boat Fishing Trips

Abstract

As changing regulations result in additional harvest restrictions and a shorter fishing season, recreational fishing opportunities are being impacted negatively. Charter and head boat operators need to adapt to the changing conditions that boat fishing trips face and look for new customers and experiences. The authors provide boat operators with strategic information that will help them to develop new tourism products so they can continue to provide anglers with offshore access in an increasingly competitive regulatory environment. For a better understanding of fishing tourists' trade-off oriented preferences for new product offerings, a stated preference choice model was employed. Two different data analyses were conducted: an aggregate model and segmented models of resident and out-of-state anglers. The preference results indicated that anglers were interested in including non-fishing elements. From a regulatory standpoint, the provision of new fishing trip offerings is a constructive avenue for boat operators.
