Analysis of non-cognitive characteristics of marital status in Russia

Abstract

The paper analyzes the relationship of non-cognitive characteristics with the change of marital status of Russian citizens. Four options for changing the status were considered: entering into a first relationship, entering into a relationship after divorce, entering into a relationship after widowhood, as well as leaving a registered marriage. Each option assumed two competing outcomes: for the first three — marriage and cohabitation, for the fourth — divorce and widowhood. The methodology of analyzing the duration of states was applied. A statistically significant relationship between non-cognitive characteristics and the probability of the outcomes under consideration was revealed, and its dynamic features were demonstrated. Conscientiousness and extraversion were manifested for options for entering into a first relationship and a relationship after divorce, neuroticism and extraversion — for the option of entering into a relationship after widowhood, extraversion — for the outcome of divorce
