Abstract

This article investigates the relationship between the proximity of one's home to equipped green spaces and the practice of sport among Italian adults using micro data from the yearly survey of Italian daily habits published by ISTAT for the period 2014 to 2022. A LOGIT model has been estimated by using models have been estimated by using as dependent variable two dummies identifying if an adult practices sport either occasionally or continuously. We find a statistically significant positive association between living near to a park or a public green area and physical activity. The resulting average marginal effects of practicing sport in the two situations – living close to or far from equipped green areas – are 0,402 and 0,273 for people practicing sport "at least occasionally" and "continuously", respectively. The investigation confirms the importance of local municipalities and state governments in promoting physical activity by financing the redevelopment or creation of green spaces.
