Abortion Policy Context in Adolescence and Men’s Future Educational Achievement

Abstract

Limited research has investigated the impact of restricted abortion access on cisgender men’s lives. We use the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent Health (n = 3642 to 6800) and logistic regression models to examine at the relationship between four indicators of abortion access (i.e., in-county abortion provider, public insurance coverage for abortion, parental consent laws, and informed consent laws) during adolescence and men’s educational achievement in early adulthood and midlife. We find a negative cumulative relationship between barriers to abortion access and men’s educational achievement; however, this relationship is concentrated among men whose parents have the equivalent of less than a high school degree. These findings suggest an important relationship between abortion access and social wellbeing not just among people who get pregnant, but also their partners.
