Abstract

The integration of digital technologies is reshaping rural China’s energy consumption patterns, yet its role in advancing the household energy ladder remains underexplored. Using China Family Panel Studies survey data matched with the county-level digital village index data, we empirically test the impact of digital village development on rural household energy choices. Results show that digitalization significantly drives households toward cleaner and more efficient modern energy sources; mechanism analysis reveals that information access, improved infrastructure, and economic development mediate this effect, while heterogeneity tests find more pronounced benefits among households engaged in non-agricultural work, with migrant workers, or receiving government subsidies. These findings highlight the vital role of rural digitalization in facilitating sustainable energy transitions and offer valuable guidance for policymaking.
