Process simulation and multi-criteria investigation and comparison of a thermally waste management for a gas turbine power plant

Abstract

Effective waste management is vital for the elevation of the long-term operation and sustainability of power plants. This investigation proposes a novel combined cooling, heating, and power system according to a gas turbine cycle integrated with cascade thermal waste management and a Kalina cycle refrigeration unit. The system includes distinct power and heat generation sections to raise efficiency and environmental operation. The system is modeled utilizing Aspen HYSYS and assessed from energy, exergy, economic, and environmental perspectives. Outputs indicate a high energy efficiency of 75.96 % and an exergy efficiency of 63.94 %. Compared to conventional separate generation, the suggested system obtained an energy saving of 47.57 %. The carbon dioxide emission is reduced to 0.256 kgCO2/kWh, which represents a 53.08 % decline. Economically, the system shows strong feasibility with a levelized cost of energy of $0.158/kWh and a total product unit cost of $59.04/GJ. The net present value is calculated as 64.8 $M, which confirms the system's economic viability. Optimization is conducted by use of the Bio-inspired Algorithm, which focuses on exergy efficiency and economic indicators. The optimized system gives out an exergy efficiency of 48.582 % and decreases the levelized cost of energy to $0.150/kWh. When prioritizing environmental performance, the system yielded an exergy efficiency of 48.264 % and a lower specific CO2 emission of 0.241 kgCO2/kWh. Overall, the proposed system offers a promising approach to achieving efficient, low-emission, and economically viable energy generation.
