Abstract

Salt cavern hydrogen storage (SCHS) is regarded as a highly effective method of large-scale hydrogen storage in the future. However, there is currently no comprehensive evaluation system to determine the feasibility of SCHS. In this study, a comprehensive evaluation index system that considers the stability, tightness and geological suitability of SCHS was proposed. The feasibility of hydrogen storage in S1 salt cavern in Huai'an was evaluated using the analytic hierarchy process (AHP) - fuzzy comprehensive evaluation method (FCE). The results indicate that the comprehensive evaluation grade of the S1 salt cavern is T3 grade, suggesting that it is feasible for hydrogen storage. Furthermore, sensitivity analysis demonstrated that when the interlayer permeability surpasses 1e−18 m2 or the salt rock permeability surpasses 1e−20 m2, the tightness of S1 salt cavern is designated as T5 grade due to substandard tightness properties, rendering it unsuitable for hydrogen storage. It is noteworthy that as the elastic modulus of the rock increases, so too do the stability and tightness properties of the salt cavern. The comprehensive evaluation model proposed in this study can provide a reference for the siting of SCHS, and has a significant impact on the safety and hydrogen storage efficiency of SCHS.
