How the relational structure of universities influences research and development results

Abstract

Many universities have the strategic goal of raising the standards of their research and development (R&D) results. One of the main measures taken by universities, especially those with a vocation in technological areas such as semiconductors, to achieve higher standards is to promote the externalities of intellectual property by filing patents. However, there is a research gap in the literature regarding the ways that academic institutions can promote the generation of patents. This study identifies, for three different time periods, which combinations of the relational structures of universities with external actors best influence R&D results. To identify these combinations, the present research uses patent data from the global semiconductor industry in conjunction with social network analysis (SNA) and qualitative comparative analysis (QCA). Our results emphasize that to succeed in current R&D activities, universities need to increase their relationships with the network's most influential actors.
