Abstract

This study analyzes A-share listed firms in Shanghai and Shenzhen from 2009 to 2023, using web scraping to track mentions of "digital transformation" in annual reports. It quantitatively measures the extent of digital transformation adoption, assessing its impact on environmental governance. The findings show that digital transformation significantly enhances green governance performance, supported by robust analysis and instrumental variables. Heterogeneity analysis reveals stronger effects in technology-intensive, less-polluting industries, state-owned enterprises, eastern regions, and companies with older, male-dominated management teams with financial backgrounds. Mechanism analysis indicates that digital transformation boosts green innovation, productivity, and governance outcomes, offering empirical insights for policy development on sustainable business practices.
