A new arrangement methodology for enhancing PV array production under partial shade operation

Abstract

A common problem that reduces photovoltaic (PV) systems' generated power is partial shade. Therefore, this study suggests a novel dynamic reconfiguration approach for PV array based on the Hannibal Barca optimizer (HBO) intended for total-cross-tied (TCT) layout. HBO avoids premature convergence and local solutions by maintaining strong exploration/exploitation balance. Also, its modular design facilitates modifications enhancing the HBO effectiveness and enabling customization to address various optimization challenges. Minimizing the 9 × 9 PV array row current difference under distinct partial shade is the considered target. Five traditional partial shades, short wide (SW), short narrow (SN), long wide (LW), long narrow (LN), and lower triangle (LT), are examined. The proposed HBO is contrasted with the most popular TCT and SudoKu layouts, the published African vultures optimization algorithm (AVOA), and other programmed metaheuristic methods like Dholes-inspired optimizer (DIO), Harris hawks optimizer (HHO), and grey wolf optimizer (GWO). In the five shade patterns under study, the fill factor (FF), performance ratio (PR), and power enhancement (Pe) indices are also computed. Furthermore, the analysis during real-world partial shade operation is carried out hourly for the PV array located in Sakaka city, Aljouf region, Saudi Arabia considering variations in the daytime temperature and solar irradiance. A rule-based approach is suggested to replicate the shadowing pattern that depicts the sun's position change throughout the day. The lower triangular shade operation yields the most power improvement of 40.98% via the proposed HBO, whereas the short narrow shade operation harvests the lowest value of 8.21%. Also, during the real-world shade operation, the recommended HBO achieves the best power boost of 3.78%. The acquired results confirmed the suggested HBO-reconfiguration methodology's proficiency and resilience.
