Abstract

Microgrids comprise of decentralized energy supplies, storage systems, and loads that may be standalone or grid-connected. The standalone microgrid plays a significant role in rural electrification systems. Photovoltaic systems have gained attention as distributed generation systems in which auxiliary units can be included to meet increasing demand. The microgrid consists of a photovoltaic system as an energy source that supplies AC and DC loads. Partial shading degrades the performance of photovoltaic systems. A microgrid comprises of series-parallel and parallel-connected photovoltaic array to deliver the supply for AC and DC loads. The consequence of partial shading will be more adverse on the series-parallel array than the parallel-connected one. Therefore, this study proposes an adaptive reconfiguration technique between series-parallel and parallel connected photovoltaic arrays to maximize the power generation of the microgrid. To validate the superiority of the proposed microgrid, it is tested experimentally under ten partial shading conditions. The results of cases 5 and 9 reveal that the proposed microgrid has attained the power enhancement ratio of 19 % and 15 % compared to conventional microgrid, demonstrating its superiority in extracting the output power. Further, the results of a comprehensive analysis of the reconfiguration technique of the proposed microgrid has exhibited a power enhancement ratio of 53 % compared to the conventional series-parallel photovoltaic array. Overall, the proposed microgrid has enhanced the power enhancement ratio by 8 % compared to the conventional microgrid. The economic analysis of the proposed microgrid reveals its feasibility in terms of the payback period.
