Reconfiguration strategy for solar array system on stratospheric airship based on cost-benefit analysis

Abstract

The reconfigurable solar array (SA) system ensures a stable energy supply for stratospheric airships under fault conditions. but excessive redundancy can result in the weight of SA system becoming too heavy. In this paper, the energy system of solar-powered stratospheric airship was presented. The methodology including the airship curved surface solar radiation, reconfigurable system reliability and reconfigurable SA system cost was developed. The reliability of traditional reconfigurable energy system was analyzed. Aimed at the optimal reconfiguration strategy, the voting strategy influence, the electrical performance analysis, the solar array redundant cost and the total cost of the SA system were investigated in detail. The results show that the voting strategy significantly affects the SA system's failure probability but has minimal impact on the airship's payload power loss (less than 1.01 %). Moreover, uneven solar radiation distribution on the airship increases the redundant solar array cost, exceeding the reconfigurable coefficient by up to 43.23 %, the voting strategy can reduce total costs by up to 87.79 % compared to the traditional SA system, Furthermore, the optimal number of subsystems ranges from 9 to 18 based on the ideal interference resistance to weight ratio. This study would be helpful for reconfigurable SA system design of stratospheric airship.
