Study on the impact of digitalization on multidimensional energy poverty in Guangdong Province—Empirical test based on Alkire-Foster method

Abstract

The alleviation of rural energy poverty is a primary concern for enhancing the quality and efficiency of rural development in China. Within this context, digitalization emerges as a potential avenue for tackling rural energy poverty. Given the status of Guangdong Province as a leading province in poverty alleviation in China, the article utilizes the Alkire-Foster method to quantify multidimensional energy poverty in rural areas of Guangdong province and employs a multiple linear regression model to examine the potential alleviating effect of digitization on multidimensional energy poverty in the region. Findings show that: (1) As marginal income increases, the elasticity of rural electricity consumption is positively correlated with long-distance cable density in low- and middle-income areas, but negatively correlated in high-income areas; (2) Digitalization significantly impacts energy supply and multidimensional energy poverty through energy efficiency, more so than social conditions; (3) The impact of digitization on rural resource poverty in Guangdong is greater in areas with high levels of science and education.
