Abstract

This study investigates operational challenges and optimisation strategies in heavy and bulk cargo transportation at Zambia Railways Limited. Using a mixed-methods approach, the research examines the influence of infrastructure quality, technological capability, and workforce capacity on operational performance. Findings reveal persistent inefficiencies arising from deteriorating infrastructure, outdated rolling stock, limited staff training, and weak coordination, with statistically significant associations between these factors and performance. The study recommends strategic infrastructure rehabilitation, adoption of digital and predictive maintenance technologies, continuous workforce development, and strengthened institutional partnerships to enhance operational efficiency and regional competitiveness.
