Lohnunterschiede zwischen Ost- und Westdeutschland: Neue Einsichten

Abstract

Dieser Beitrag untersucht empirisch die ökonomischen Bestimmungsgründe des nach wie vor bestehenden Lohnunterschieds zwischen Ost- und Westdeutschland. Durch die Verwendung eines Mikrodatensatzes, welcher Angaben zur Personen- und Betriebsebene über die Zeit enthält, und die Anwendung neuer ökonometrischer Methoden ergeben sich zum Teil unerwartete neue Einsichten in die Thematik. Im Ergebnis zeigt sich, dass auf der Ebene der Betriebe nur die unterschiedliche Branchenstruktur zwischen Ost- und Westdeutschland einen bedeutsamen Teil des Lohndifferenzials erklärt. Entgegen der weit verbreiteten Erwartung haben die durchschnittlich kleineren Betriebe, die geringere Verbreitung von Betriebsräten oder die lückenhaftere Abdeckung von Tarifverträgen in Ostdeutschland in Summe nur einen statistisch vernachlässigbaren Einfluss.
