This article analyzes the occupational and educational choices among males in the 18-24 age group in Chile. The decision to work, for those who do not study, is analyzed jointly with the decision to study, in order to avoid selection bias. Results confirm that the educational level and the years of experience, together with family and geographical background, are the main determinants of the probability of being employed for those who do not study. Family background and the availability of public funds for scholarships and financial aid affect the decision to continue studies.
