Abstract

In this paper, we study the causal effect of COVID-19 related reduction in mobility and economic activity on environment. First using spatial and temporal variation in curfews in a difference-indifferences setup and second using a regression discontinuity design, we show that ambient air quality improved following travel restrictions, public place closures and business shutdowns. Our results confirm that economic activity induces substantial negative consequences on environment and public health and highlight the need for formulating environmentally oriented strategies that harmonize economic, public health and environmental interests
