Picking up pieces after Cyclone Idai in Malawi: An economy wide CGE impact assessment

Abstract

Weather related shocks could lead to pervasive welfare outcomes. Using prior information from a rapid post-disaster needs assessment and a social accounting matrix for Malawi, we assess economy wide distributional impacts of cyclones Idai, and consider resilience enhancing pathways in a computable general equilibrium framework. Since Cyclones Idai mainly affected production activities, infrastructure and agricultural households, we model adaptations from the production side. Results show that after considering multiple linkages, the negative impacts are larger requiring more inter-sectoral coordination to get the economy on a sustainable growth path.
