Abstract

Despite extensive research on energy justice, little has been written about whether scholarly discourse on energy justice has translated into public social media discourse. This paper addresses this gap by examining Sustainable Development Goal 7 (SDG7) communications on social media. To date, this study is the first research utilizing social network analysis (SNA) and computational methods to examine social justice messaging related to SDG7 on Twitter (currently known as X) and identify central topics associated with SDG7 communications. The data used include 6059 tweets containing “#sdg7,” resulting in a hashtag co‐occurrence network with 2769 nodes and 22,667 edges. It shows that while related SDG goals, like Goal 3 on good health and well‐being, and themes, such as solar energy and African energy issues, are often discussed alongside SDG7, justice‐related issues like racial justice and important transition perspectives, such as energy justice or just transitions, are less frequently linked to it in the Twitter sphere. The findings suggest a need to better integrate justice topics into SDG7 conversations to shape more inclusive and impactful energy policies.
