Abstract

A sample of major British, Danish, Dutch, Irish, French, German, and Spanish agricultural co-ops was studied through individual interviews and the analysis of annual reports including financial results in order to find key factors of success. Data years were 1990 and 1991. The main results showed that in general specialized coops did not perform better than multipurpose co-ops. Specialized co-ops were most successful in Denmark while multipurpose co-ops did better in Ireland. A strong trend toward concentration was observed throughout the EC. The best way to export seems to be to concentrate national forces through partnerships. Internationalization is often performed through acquisitions. © 1996 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
