Designing an economic empowerment model for self-employed women under the MENARID project in Iran

Abstract

Self-employed rural women play a major role in the well-being of their families. They do not save any of the income they earn, but they spend it all for their family. Therefore, empowering women is not only in their favor but also in the favor of the whole family and, ultimately, society. It is, therefore, significant to design a model for their economic empowerment and identify the factors affecting it. So, this study aimed to design an economic empowerment model for women. The research population included self-employed rural women covered by the MENARID project who were sampled by the purposive technique. The main research tool was interview. The data were identified and analyzed through three steps of open, axial, and selective coding. Based on the results, women's economic empowerment is based on the contextual conditions (rural environment), causative conditions (economic factors, facilities received, educational factors, and product characteristics), and intervening conditions (individual characteristics, family support, subcultures, and appropriate working environment). Self-employed women's rural economic empowerment development strategies included familiarization with marketing techniques and customer acquisition, government support, and communication with information centers. The application of these strategies will have significant implications at the individual, family, and community levels.
