A blockchain platform for the truck freight marketplace in India

Abstract

Blockchain is a disruptive, general-purpose technology that has the potential of replacing entire business operation(s) across industries like Banking and horizontal functions like Supply Chains globally. It enables transactions amongst “trustless” actors thereby addressing the challenges of mistrust and lack of transparency. This study purports to assess the feasibility of a blockchain-based trucking marketplace viz. a platform of participants (users, suppliers) to adopt a blockchain technology-based trucking platform given the feature advantages and efficiencies such a platform could provide. Prior studies in blockchain or trucking platforms have not focused on blockchain trucking platform solutions and this study provides important pointers on features and other expectations that users and suppliers in India expect from such a blockchain-based platform. This study is basing its contentions on the Task Technology Fit and Fit Appropriation Model. The findings include opaque behaviour of intermediaries who abhor platform transparency, lack of consortium type behaviour as would be expected of organized industry, preference for traditional contracts, etc., and a consortium blockchain solution would, in the author’s opinion, not only address these challenges but also post time-stamped verified transaction records into a member’s enterprise resource planning system ensuring audit compliance and automation of workflows. The members (users and suppliers) of the platform prefer transparent platform fees and matching of quotes with need-to-know confidentiality for parties to a contract (post matching) and this is the underlying premise for the study where the blockchain solution brings in the desired effectiveness as well as efficiency for such a platform.
