Rendements de l'ancienneté des individus et taille des établissements

Abstract

[fre] Utilisant une enquête qui croise données d'établissement et données individuelles, cet article met en évidence un effet de la taille sur les rendements de l'ancienneté, en sus de l'effet classique sur le niveau des salaires. Pour les personnels d'exécution, la taille accroît le rendement de l'ancienneté en début de carrière mais le fait décroître plus rapidement. Pour les professions intermédiaires et les cadres, on observe le phénomène inverse. Nous discutons alors les liens pos­sibles entre cet effet de la taille et quatre hypothèses expliquant le profil du salaire selon l'ancienneté. En nous servant de données sur les caractéristiques des éta­blissements, nous trouvons des arguments économétriques en faveur de deux de ces hypothèses. [eng] In this study, a rich data set is used to show that there is a size effect on the level of wages as well as on the returns to seniority. Our results indicate that for blue collar workers, the larger the establishment size is, the higher are the returns to seniority in the beginning of workers' careers and the more rapid is the decrease of these returns to seniority. The opposite is observed for the other cate­gories of employees. We then discuss possible links between four alternative explanations of the seniority-wage profile and the observed size effect. We finally present evidence in support of two of these explanations.
