[eng] Definition and measurements of two-way trade in similar products : a re-examination. K. S. Abd-El-Rahman. The concept of " intra-industry " trade in economic literature is ambiguous. Mainly, confusion is made between the existence of two-way trade in similar products between countries, and commercial balances which may appear at the level of such trades. According to the approach that we propose, attention is made, first, to apply a precise definition of product similarity, and, second, to consider two-way trade in similar products in its totality and not as equilibrated parts of exports and imports of some aggregated trade statistics. Applying this approach to intra-EEC trade of manufactured goods revealed that simultaneous exports and imports of similar products actually take place. Thus the distinctive consideration of the "export" and the " import " parts in a two-way trade flow allowed for the observation of commercial balances, which can be negative or positive, of two-way trade. The results shoived that two-way trade in similar goods has several patterns, and is not only bilateral. The phenomenon fluctuates significantly depending on the activity and on the partner. However, the partner of the trade is shown to be the most influencing factor in the variation of phenomenon.
