Abstract

This study examines the impact of railway development on the spatial convergence of global international tourist distribution using a panel dataset from 132 countries with well-developed tourism sectors, spanning from 2013 to 2019. Utilizing spatial econometric models, the findings reveal a clear spatial convergence trend in global tourism, with railway development playing a significant role in enhancing this convergence. Additionally, the moderation analysis shows that the effect of railways on tourism spatial convergence is stronger in regions with higher economic development. Conversely, in areas with a higher number of World Heritage sites, the positive effect of railways on tourism spatial convergence diminishes.
