Impact of innovative capacity on agri-environmental efficiency and mechanism research

Abstract

Based on the panel data of 280 prefecture-level cities in China from 2001 to 2020, this paper measured the agricultural environment using the super-efficiency SBM method, and constructed a spatial Durbin model to test the impact of urban innovation capacity on agricultural environmental efficiency, which showed that (1) urban innovation capacity can effectively improve agricultural environmental efficiency, and has a significant positive neighboring city spillover effect on neighboring cities. (2) Heterogeneity analysis shows that innovation capacity has a greater promotion effect on cities with strong environmental regulation, good economic foundation and non-resource cities. (3) Further tests found that farmers' education level and rural environmental governance capacity play a significant mediating efficiency effect in the impact of urban innovation capacity on agricultural environmental efficiency. Based on the above findings, this paper puts forward suggestions in three aspects, namely, optimizing industrial structure, promoting the deep integration of industrial chain and innovation chain, strengthening the cultivation and introduction of talents, and perfecting the environmental regulatory system, to provide a policy basis for improving the agricultural environmental efficiency.
