Evaluation of the effect of palm oil mill sludge on the properties of sawdust briquette

Abstract

The importance of renewable energy technologies was presented with focus on biomass energy as the favorable renewable energy option for rural communities. Agricultural and forest residues were considered the major sources of biomass in rural communities which can sustainably contribute towards meeting the energy demand of rural people for direct heat applications through the production of biomass briquette. The effect of palm oil mill sludge as a binding agent on the properties of sawdust briquette was investigated. Palm oil mill sludge was mixed with sawdust using 10, 20, 30, 40, 50, 60, 70, 80, 90 and 100% of the weight of compacted the sawdust sample. The experimental results showed that the increased addition of palm oil mill sludge into sawdust had a significant effect (p<0.05) on the physical and the combustion properties of the sawdust briquette. The compressed and the relaxed densities, durability rating and the water resistance were all found to increase as the binder level increase from 10 to 100% while the relaxation ratio decreased. Briquettes produced using 30 and 100% binder level produced the most stabilizing effect on the sawdust briquette. The volatile matter, ash content and the heating value of the sawdust increased with increasing binder level while the fixed carbon decreased. The optimum binder level for sawdust briquette production using palm oil mill sludge as the binding agent was observed to be the 100% binder level.
