Deployment strategies and carbon reduction potential of hybrid energy storage systems for industrial parks

Abstract

Hybrid energy storage systems (HESS) can fully utilize the advantages of each storage technology, forming complementary benefits, and significantly improving the economy and carbon reduction in industrial parks. In this study, the key factors influencing the deployment and benefits of HESSs were investigated. Suitable industrial park scenarios for HESS deployment, along with choices of energy storage methods and capacities, were identified. The formation mechanisms and advantages of the application of HESSs in industrial parks were analyzed. The results show that the unit cost is the most critical factor for HESS's economic benefits, while deployment capacity is the key factor influencing the system's on-site photovoltaic utilization and carbon reduction. Most industrial parks in China are suitable for deploying cooling-thermal-electricity HESSs because they have significant cooling, heating, and electrical loads. Moreover, deploying photovoltaic with 12-h HESSs can reduce the carbon emissions of China's industrial parks from 3.2 billion tons to 0.79 billion tons.
