Towards green extraction: Assessing the social and economic progress and challenges of green mining in China for policy formulation

Abstract

The primary objective of this study is to assess and scrutinize the progress and efficacy of green mining practices in China. This analysis aims to contribute to the creation and execution of efficient policies that promote sustainable mining. In this context, four broad categories of sixteen indicators have been employed in the study, which include scientific and technological innovation indicators to prioritize the development of cleaner extraction technologies and sustainable energy solutions, ecological protection indicators to target the prevention of land degradation and biodiversity, harmony indicator to focuse on activities aimed at engaging stakeholders and developing the community, and safety indicators to stress the promotion of occupational health and the avoidance of accidents. The relationship between various levels was gauged using the Analytical Hierarchy Process along with the entropy weight method during 2009–2022. Moreover, sub-indexes scores and weighted values have been derived, in addition to determining the relation between sub-systems using the coupling of subsystems coordination model. The results indicate that (1) China's geen mining industry has shown positive growth on year-to-year basis despite asymmetric changes in development. (2) Subsytems in China's green mining industry lack consistency and inter-coordination. (3) There exist various hurdles in the fields of administration and management of China's green mining industry development.
