Shooting two hawks with one arrow: The role of digitization on the coordinated development of resources and environment

Abstract

The digital economy is assuming a pivotal role in both the societal and governmental realms, permeating various facets of daily life. Consequently, a comprehensive investigation into the digital economy becomes imperative for the concurrent mitigation of residential pollution and carbon emissions. This study employs panel data encompassing 30 provinces and regions in China spanning the years 2011–2020, constructing the synergistic reduction of residential pollution and carbon index. Empirical examinations are conducted utilizing the generalized method of moments (GMM). The results underscore a substantial amelioration in the synergistic reduction of residential pollution and carbon emanating from the development of the digital economy. This positive influence is attributed to heightened environmental consciousness and eco-friendly travel practices among residents. Conversely, the impact of environmental petitions is found to be negligible, and residents' network-based shopping behavior may impede the synergistic reduction of residential pollution and carbon. This research advocates that China can steer residents towards environmentally sustainable conduct by fostering digital economy growth, thereby fostering a widespread adoption of green lifestyles.
