Abstract

This study examines the relationship between CEO narcissism and bank performance during the onset of an exogenous shock. Using data from US-listed banks during the COVID-19 pandemic, we find that firms led by narcissistic CEOs prior to the shock are associated with lower abnormal returns and higher share-price volatility during the onset of the shock. However, the negative relationship is attenuated by CEO age, suggesting that increasing CEO age may enhance bank resilience by fostering more humble and conscientious behavior.
