Abstract

This study scrutinizes the implications of shifting priorities in energy crop use within China's energy transition strategy, with a focus on sustainability, resource allocation, and energy security. By employing an energy system optimization model and scenario analysis, the research investigates the potential consequences of phasing out energy crops, including the projected increase in energy imports and associated costs, which could range from €14 to €25 billion annually. The analysis reveals that decisions on energy crop cultivation significantly affect the transformation of industrial heat applications, with solid biomass emerging as the most economically viable alternative. As mentioned in the study, there is a need to grow comprehensive strategies that align energy policies with sustainability objectives, taking into account social, economic, and environmental considerations. The outcomes can be useful for the future orientation of the Chinese energy sector and for the balance needed to satisfy renewable energy targets, as well as for addressing broader sustainability issues.
