Abstract

•Lotka-Volterra equations as a cornerstone of quantitative ecology reach 100 years.•Originally developed to model the dynamics of predator-prey interactions.•Extended to span all possible types of interspecies interactions in the GLV model.•Have since evolved into a versatile framework for studying complex systems.•GLV has applications far beyond biology, e.g. economics, physics, sociology.
