Rethinking Dynamic Capabilities For A Digital World: A Bibliometric Analysis Of Emerging Trends And Conceptual Shifts

Abstract

This study investigates the intellectual evolution of research at the intersection of dynamic capabilities and digital transformation. A bibliometric analysis (using author keywords as unit of analysis) was performed on 521 SCOPUS-indexed journal articles spanning 2000-2024. Using VOSviewer, the study maps the co-occurrence patterns and temporal development of key concepts in the field. The results show: (1) A structured intellectual evolution from foundational concepts (e.g., resource-based view, competitive advantage) toward more specialized and contemporary themes (e.g., organizational resilience, sustainability, digital platform capabilities). (2) Seven thematic clusters, including rising stars areas (Technology-driven sustainability, SMEs and business model innovation, and Strategic transformation and Industry), core areas (Digital capabilities and competitive advantage and Dynamic capabilities and performance outcomes), and mature areas (Innovation, digitalization, and value and Digital strategy and social media) - illustrating the increasing specialization and diversity within the (new research) field. (3) a shift in how dynamic capabilities are conceptualized: from firm-centric routines to ecosystem-oriented, platform-driven, and socio-technically embedded capabilities. These findings contribute to theory by highlighting the need for updated frameworks - to reflect the complexity of dynamic capabilities in the digital era. The study also offers practical and policy-relevant insights for building adaptive, digitally integrated capabilities.
