Wettbewerb und Pfadabhängigkeit in Netzen

Abstract

In diesem Aufsatz wird gezeigt, dass das Phänomen der Pfadabhängigkeit in Netzsektoren besonders relevant ist. Auf der Nachfrageseite können positive Netzexternalitäten dazu führen, dass eine weitverbreitete Technologie mit einer großen Nutzerbasis selbst dann noch beibehalten wird, wenn eine bessere Technologie entwickelt worden ist. Auf der Produktionsseite können bestehende Netzinfrastrukturen weiter ausgebaut werden, auch wenn inzwischen völlig neuartige Netztechnologien zur Verfügung stehen. Es zeigt sich, dass pfadabhängige Entwicklungen im Zeitablauf typischerweise nicht durch Zufälle gesteuert sind und zu einem Verharren in einem ineffizienten Status quo führen, sondern Ergebnis unternehmerischer Entscheidungsprozesse und rationaler Konsumentenentscheidungen im Wettbewerb sind. Pfadabhängige Netzentwicklungen be-inhalten enorme Potenziale bei der Netznutzung und der Netzweiterentwicklung, die der Wettbewerb ausschöpfen kann.
