Abstract

Le commerce équitable propose un ensemble de pratiques socio-économiques alternatives au commerce international conventionnel. La force des Etats du Nord dans les négociations internationales et les objectifs de profit optimal des firmes multinationales constituent des freins puissants au développement économique des pays plus pauvres et de leurs producteurs, notamment ruraux. Le commerce équitable respecte des pratiques soucieuses de protéger les producteurs et des consommateurs sur la base de règles équitables et partenariales. Il s'oppose donc, au moins partiellement, aux pratiques du commerce défini selon les règles de l'OMC. Au regard de ces enjeux, le commerce équitable exerce une activité qui reste marginale et ses performances manquent encore de continuité. Dans ce contexte, les Etats qui peuvent soutenir ce type de production, dans le cadre de la protection de ses citoyens et du commerce national, face à la force des compagnies multinationales.
