Abstract

The EU Labour Force Survey contains information about persons who are working abroad but are closely related to a domestic household (international commuters and non-commuters whom the survey reaches directly or indirectly through a domestic household). The aim of the study is to analyse the features of the work-related migration among the population aged 15–64 in the new EU member countries of Central and Eastern Europe. First, the trends between 2004 and 2013 are examined according to destinations. This is followed by an analysis of differences in year 2013 foreign employment rates between Austria and each CEE country by a technique based on standardisation. The aim is to identify the groups that drive these differences. Finally, countries characterised by higher changes in foreign employment rates between 2004 and 2013 are analysed with a similar method. Based on the results, despite continuous and since 2007 more dynamic growth, the share Hungarians who work abroad but are closely related to a domestic household is not extremely high in the region.
