Impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on food security and income of rice producers in developing countries: Evidence from five Sub-Saharan African countries

Abstract

Since February 2020, the World is facing unprecedented challenges caused by the corona virus disease (COVID-19). Different measures including complete lockdown were taken to contain the pandemic. This study aimed to assess the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on income food security of rice farmers in Africa. A total of 2,705 rice farmers were randomly sampled in Cote d’Ivoire, Madagascar, Sierra Leone, Senegal and Togo. Descriptive statistics and fixed effect regression models were used to assess the impact of the pandemic on rice producers. Results showed that 81% of actors perceived that their income decreased due to the pandemic. Access to inputs such as seeds, fertilizer and herbicide became more difficult and expensive. Also, access to agricultural advice became difficult to about 45% of rice farmers. We find evidence that the pandemic decreased the income of rice farmers by about US$ 146 per month. This led to a reduction of the number of meals by 0.28 unit per day and put 18% of rice farmers in food insecurity. The facilitation of credit, agricultural advice and input access for smallholder farmers could be one strategy to avoid food shortages and deficits among farmers.
