Evaluating privatization in Hungary's wine industry: A framework for analysis

Abstract

The future competitiveness of central and eastern European countries will depend, to a large part, on the strategies chosen for the privatization of their agricultural sectors. This article develops a heuristic framework to test alternative privatization strategies against criterion variables important for market competition and for achieving certain social objectives. The framework is tested against privatization of the Hungarian wine industry and indicates that the industry may be less competitive than planned. The analysis suggests how the approach can be used in other sectors and countries. © 1994 by John Wiley & sons, Inc.
