L'effet de l'enseignement de la langue maternelle sur les compétences en lecture des élèves de deuxième année du primaire en Mauritanie

Abstract

Cet article étudie l'impact de l'enseignement de la langue maternelle sur les compétences en lecture des élèves de deuxième année du primaire en Mauritanie, un contexte multilingue dominé par l'arabe, à partir notamment d’un modèle logit multinomial basé sur les données d’une enquête réalisée en 2023 par Counterpart International. Les principaux résultats montrent que l'utilisation de l’arabe comme langue d'enseignement a un effet significatif sur les progrès en lecture des élèves. Ceux qui reçoivent un enseignement en français à cet âge ont par contre une plus grande probabilité de se retrouver dans des catégories où les compétences en lecture sont inférieures. Ces résultats soulignent l'importance de l'ensei-gnement dans la langue maternelle pour améliorer les capacités en lecture des élèves. Les politiques éducatives devraient se concentrer sur la formation des enseignants pour une utilisation efficace de la langue maternelle, encourager la participation des familles et mettre en place des programmes de soutien en lecture pour les élèves en difficulté. En intégrant ces mesures dans les programmes scolaires en primaire, un environnement éducatif plus inclusif pourrait être créé, favorisant les compétences en lecture et la réussite scolaire des élèves.
