Abstract

Ramachandran L. and Scott S. Single-player universities in the south: the role of university actors in development in Vietnam's North Central Coast region, Regional Studies. Despite significant poverty reduction since the late 1980s, Vietnam has seen a growing imbalance in regional development patterns. Recent research from Northern countries suggests that 'single universities in peripheral regions' (Boucher et al., 2003) can be key actors in regional development. This perspective is applied to the role of Vinh University within a rural region of Vietnam. The long-term, localized presence of universities in Southern countries represents an alternative to short-term, foreign development projects. University-based centres can fill 'missing links' between academia, government, civil society, and the private sector on a regional level. This role is essential in Vietnam, where national civil society groups are nascent.
